Edwin van Gelder

Edwin is an independent graphic designer based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After graduating from Utrecht School of the Arts in 2005, he founded graphic design studio Mainstudio. Here Edwin leads the creative development of various national and international projects in editorial design, books and visual identities. Mainstudio's clients include  Frame Publishers, Wiel Arets Architects, Nike, Mondriaan Foundation and the Dutch Fashion Biennial.

A strong conceptual thinker, Edwin's work has won various international awards, such as Art Directors Club New York, Best Dutch Book Design and Best Dutch Annual Report Design. He regularly judges international design competitions, including Art Directors Club New York and Selected A - Graphic Design from Europe. Edwin's work has also been part of international design exhibitions, such as Tokyo Graphic Passport. Edwin has been featured in a large number of industry books and magazines, including +81 Magazine (Japan), Slanted (Germany), September Industry (UK), Turning Pages (Germany), Process Journal of Design (Australia) and Holanda Diseña (Spain).

Edwin loves architecture, art and fashion. His design approach always starts by creating a clear, creative concept, while playing with the context and looking for something unique in each assignment. Fond of fonts, Edwin often searches for solutions within the boundaries of typography.
