During Creative Week 2011, The One Club hosted a great event, WHERE ARE ALL THE BLACK PEOPLE. Jeff Goodby and Jimmy Smith led a conversation on diversity in advertising. It was an honest discussion with alot of participation from the audience. So the archive department got to thinking... who was the first black advertising executive. Vincent T. Cullers was known as "The Dean" in Black advertising. He began looking for work at advertising agencies in 1940. He graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago. He opened Vince Cullers Advertising in 1956 and targeted the African American market. Besides a client list that had Lorillard, Sears, Kellogg's and many more, Vince created the Afro Sheen "Wantu Wazuri" campaign. We all saw these great ads on Soul Train, besides some great dancing that was just a little different than Bandstand. Take a look at the video.
