The Walking Dead was the number one show in America and had become the crown jewel of quality-programming king AMC. From its premiere onward, Season Four had drawn record audiences. But, as has become custom, the show took a months-long hiatus in the middle of the season and a lot was riding on its return to the airwaves. Adding to the pressure, The Walking Dead's second-half launch would coincide with the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. To generate a huge swell of buzz and re-energize show faithful, we brought zombies to the streets of New York City. More specifically, 15 hungry walkers shocked passersby from under a sidewalk grate while hidden cameras rolled. The resulting video garnered over 10 million views, 300 million media impressions and was the most-viral piece of content AMC has ever created. The season 4.5 launch tied the premiere in ratings and bested the Olympics.
