Saint-Gobain's High-Performance Materials Group is a dynamic, global business with research and development activities centered in Northboro, Massachusetts (NRDC).  The Northboro operation has been a major center for materials research since 1985.  We have an outstanding record of achievement, and are committed to growth through the development of proprietary products based on novel materials and process technologies.  The 186,000-square-foot R&D Center is based in three buildings on a 26-acre site near I-290 in Northboro and has approximately 350 employees from 30 different countries.



Saint-Gobain Northborough R&D Center (NRDC) is looking for a creative and talented individual, who shares our passion and enthusiasm for building and construction to join our CertainTeed R&D Platforms group.  The candidate will be responsible for maintaining and managing a Design team tasked with identifying and developing new products for the commercial and residential construction markets of CertainTeed to satisfy challenging customer needs. The candidate will work on product development, from concept to launch, in a cross-functional team closely with R&D, sales, marketing, and operations.


As the Design Group Leader you will work to foster and manage a team to assist in all aspects of the design process, including customer insights, conceptualizing, digital modeling, rendering, researching manufacturing techniques, and implementation.  Applicants should have an education in Industrial Design, Architecture, Architectural Engineering & Design, Industrial Engineering, or related field.  We are looking for individuals with creativity, intelligence, passion, drive and motivation; as well as exceptional communication, organization, design skills, and strategic thinking.


Candidate must be innovative, self-starter with the ability and motivation to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast paced research and development environment with a bias for action and growth.  Candidate must possess collaboration skills, strong project and time management skills, solid technical and problem solving skills, and excellent verbal communication and writing skills.  Travel, domestic and international, is required for customer visits, technical meetings and collaboration, factory visits, and seminars.



A degree (B.S. minimum) in Industrial Design, Architecture, Architectural Design or Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Design or related discipline. Background in building and construction a plus. The preferred candidate will have applied industry experience in related field with demonstrated technical judgment/accomplishments, team leadership, collaboration, and a track-record for the development of new products; 10+ years of applied industrial experience desired.

Creative problem-solving with a hands-on approach to product development.

Working in a matrix organization, the candidate will be able to communicate and interact effectively with a range of people including business, manufacturing, and research managers, process engineers, technicians, and operators.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work well on both large Research and Development Teams as well as independently.

Comfortable with CAD/CAM programs (Solidworks, AutoDesk, etc.)

Experience using 3D models for animation, simulation, and creating high quality renderings

Experience in manufacturing and rapid prototyping techniques

Comfortably working with power tools for prototyping purposes, previous field construction experience a plus.

Knowledge of current building practices with an understanding of leading construction methods a plus
