Bernice Fitz-Gibbon, head of advertising at both Macy's and Gimbel's, was one of retail advertising's great practitioners. "The Fabulous Fitz" was noted for her enduring campaigns. Macy's "It's smart to be thrifty" lasted for generations, as did her "Nobody but nobody" line for Gimbel's, which went through countless permutations and entered the vernacular in both English and French.
