Oct 10, 2005

NEW YORK, NY (October 10, 2005) - The One Club announced today the induction of three new members into the Creative Hall of Fame: Cliff Freeman of Cliff Freeman and Partners, New York; John Hegarty of Bartle Bogle Hegarty, London; and Diane Rothschild of Della Femina Rothschild Jeary and Partners, New York. Mary Warlick, Executive Director of The One Club, made the announcement.

These legendary creative geniuses will be honored at a black-tie dinner on October 27 at the Metropolitan Club in New York City. The evening will be chaired by Rich Silverstein of Omnicon Group's Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco, who was inducted into The One Club Creative Hall of Fame last year.

For more than 40 years, the Creative Hall of Fame has paid tribute to advertising's most brilliant minds whose unwavering creativity and commitment to excellence have raised standards in their industry. Membership in the Creative Hall of Fame represents a lifetime achievement.

"Each of these three outstanding visionaries has touched the advertising industry, not simply leaving their mark, but molding and changing society," said Warlick. "Cliff introduced ground-breaking humor into commercials, and his slogans are among the world's most recognizable. John pioneered the use of music in advertisements, with his soundtracks making it to the top of the charts. Diane is known for her intelligent, thought-provoking copywriting."

Diane is the first woman to be inducted recently. Mary Wells Lawrence (1969), Phyllis K. Robinson (1968), Shirley Polykoff (1974) and Bernice Fitz-Gibbon (1967) are among the other women who are past inductees.

Cliff Freeman, the creator of several classic lines, such as "Where's the Beef?" for Wendy's and "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't" for Mounds/Almond Joy, has established the benchmark for smart humor in commercials. His "Where's the beef?" campaign was named "The Best Commercial of the Twentieth Century." A Mississippi native and Florida State graduate, Freeman launched his career as a copy writer for Coca Cola at McCann Erickson in 1971. Since then, he joined Dancer Fitzgerald & Sample and became one of the executive creative directors for their successor, Saatchi & Saatchi. In 1988 Freeman founded Cliff Freeman and Partners, which has won 48 One Show Pencils - 22 belonging to Freeman himself.

John Hegarty, who started his career as a junior art director for Benton and Bowles, has gone on to found several major advertising firms: Saatchi & Saatchi in 1970, TBWALondon in 1973, and Bartle Bogle Hegarty in 1982. At BBH, Hegarty was responsible for casting then-unknown Nick Kamen in the famous Landerette commercial for Levi's and Brad Pitt for another ad. Known for his work on Audi and Johnnie Walker, he also pioneered the use of music for Levi's, for which seven soundtracks boomed to the UK's number one spot. Since its inception, BBH has expanded globally, with offices in Singapore, New York, Tokyo, and Sao Paolo.

Diane Rothschild was the most award-winning copywriter for Doyle Dane Bernbach, where she began her career in 1973. By 1986, she advanced to Executive Vice President, Creative Director, and a member of the board of directors, and had created signature campaigns for Chivas Regal, CIGNA and IBM. In 1986 she founded Grace & Rothschild with fellow Hall of Fame member Roy Grace. Known for its smart creative, the agency's major accounts included Range Rover. Having merged with Della Femina/Jeary and Partners in 2000, she is now Vice Chairman of Della Femina Rothschild Jeary and Partners.

The Creative Hall of Fame grew out of the Copy Club Hall of Fame, and its first honoree was Leo Burnett, inducted in 1961. Other notable Creative Hall of Fame members include David Ogilvy (1963), Bill Bernbach (1964), Ed McCabe (1974), Howard Gossage (1970), Jay Chiat (1994) and Lee Clow (1997). Last year's inductees were Jeff Goodby, Rich Silverstein, Mike Tesch and the late Patrick Kelly.
