One Show Design 2007
The One Club gives design its own night.
By: Terry Kattleman Published: Jul 13, 2007
Design has been a part of the One Show since 2001, but the One Club held its first ever One Show Design Awards ceremony on July 12, at New York's Chelsea Art Museum. The decision to spin off design honors reflects the increasing number of entries received from around the world as well as the growing emphasis on good design in the consumer marketplace, One Club CEO Mary Warlick explains. "Package design is often a consumer's first experience of a product," she notes. "By giving design its own special night, we're sending an unmistakable message — good design is good for business."

In addition, as One Club board member Joe Duffy of Duffy Design, the evening's first presenter, pointed out, the winners were pretty much split evenly between ad agencies and design firms, demonstrating the increasing synergy between advertising and design in virtually all areas of marketing communications. This is exemplified by Apple Computer, the show's big winner, collecting six Pencils, including Gold for its iPod Nano packaging. Seen here are some other Gold winners: a Pearl Jam poster from Seattle's Ames Bros; Taxi/Toronto's corporate identity campaign for the Canadian Film Centre; Cost Vineyard package design from Portland's Sandstrom Design — the wine labels feature newspaper clippings that mention the client; and POP for ECSA Female Recruiting Co. from Saatchi & Saatchi/Dubai. The show also featured a retrospective exhibition of the past six years of One Show Design, which will remain open to the public through July 21.

One Last Show Designed to Round out the Award Season
By Ken Wheaton
Published: July 16, 2007
Just when you thought awards season was over and you could put your finest Sunday-going-to-church duds away until next year, the One Club rolled out another one. On July 12, the Club handed out more gold and silver Pencils at its first ever One Show Design awards, which was spun off from the main events due to an increasing tide of entries. And, as if to prove the point that the judges weren't simply confining design to product packaging, one gold pencil went to Blind, Santa Monica, for the video it created for Gnarls Barkley's hit "Crazy."

Gnarls Barkley is not related to Charles Barkley.
Judges this year included Alan Dye of Apple Computer, Missy Wilson of Move Lab, Paulina Reyes of Kate Spade, among others.
Oddly enough, despite hearing "Crazy" about a million and a half times in the last year, Adage had never seen the video until this particular show. We'd also never seen some of the stuff being sold in the Chelsea Art Museum's gift shop. One particular favorite of partygoers, some of whom laughed like school boys at a fart joke, was what appeared to be an anatomically correct purse. We're not going to try describing what that means other than it wasn't a man-bag and the flesh-colored clutch had some unseemly puckering on one side.

One Show Proves Design Is "Alive and Well-Regarded"
Even though they've recognized design since 2001, The One Club pulled off its first-ever One Show Design Awards as a separate occasion late last week and the gallery of winners is now online. Although it's difficult to tell exactly who besides Apple came out on top, we'll raise a glass to all who walked away as proud owners of a pencil or two. Their work will be up at the Chelsea Art Museum until July 20 as evidence, according to the press release, that design actually exists:
From rock concert posters to beer bottles to practically everything Apple designed in the past year, the very first One Show Design awards ceremony proved that design excellence is indeed alive and well-regarded in the realm of branding and communications.
In case, you know, you forgot.
