The One Show Awards 2006

Do you love advertising or hate advertising? It seems to me that the people here fall into two camps.

There are those of you who love advertising and revel in the exploits of the people doing the work. You study the trades, the journals, the award shows, you talk about the business late into the night in chat rooms. You can recite the credits on pieces from 15 years ago. You can’t get enough. Face it: If you’re not somebody like this, you probably know somebody like this.

Then there’s the other camp. You are the ones who absolutely hate advertising–really just the other side of the same coin. You are the people annoyed by advertising. You think it’s intrusive, loud, and in your estimation 95% of what you read, see, and try to avoid clicking on is utter crap. You know who you are.

Well, you’re both right. Whichever camp you fall into, you both try to add to the landscape of our business without polluting the cosmos. You both practice the craft as a mix of art and commerce. You try to create something powerful and unique. One side because you love the idea of adding a little history to this crazy business, the other side because you can’t stand the thought of the usual crap giving our industry a bad name. You simply must do everything you can to overturn it.

Both of you lead by example. And, though you sometimes roll your eyes at each other, you make this industry a better place to work.
