One Show Design 2006
Depending on your point of view, this year's One Show Design participants were either wholly uninspired by the very nature of design, or, they took the creative risks necessary to challenge our ideas about it and about art and media.
The entries were refreshingly varied. Unlike in some years past, there was no single dominating style across the entries, nor were there any common driving trends or themes. On the other hand, there were no groundbreaking discoveries or standout leaders. What is abundantly clear on the whole, however, is that the emphasis was more on the underlying concept and less on the aesthetic skin.
This year's participants were after the Big Idea.
Consistent with that pursuit, more ad-like objects were submitted in this design competition than I've ever seen in the past. We saw non-traditional outdoor media, direct mail and promotional items--and these created a dilemma for some of my fellow design judges. How do you ultimately evaluate design, especially when it comes in an unexpected form?
So yes, this year's participants challenged the boundaries and our preconceptions, and they should be applauded for it. Ultimately, perhaps we should see the three yearly competitions rolled into one--truly ONE Show with a focus on inspired creativity in all its forms.
