Academy of Art University
Academy of Art University was founded in 1929 when Richard S. Stephens, an Art Director for Sunset Magazine, rented a loft on Kearny Street in San Francisco with 50 students. At the Academié of Advertising Art as it was known then, Stephens established a philosophy that still works today: hire top working professionals to teach future professionals. Over 75 years and a name change later, the School of Advertising is the Academy’s oldest program.
The School of Advertising curriculum emphasizes three main areas: Art Direction, Copywriting, and Account Planning. Students graduate with a competitive, well-rounded portfolio that includes print, television, radio, interactive, ambient, and integrated communications. They are able to produce this outstanding work by teaming up collaboratively with the Schools of Illustration, Motion Pictures & Television/Acting, Photography and New Media. These portfolios have helped over 90% of graduates find work with top agencies. Students not only graduate with a quality portfolio, but often with an award or two. Academy of Art University School of Advertising students have won numerous ANDY, CLIO, NY Art Directors Club, ADDY, One Show, D&AD and CMYK awards. Academy of Art University, San Francisco, is the nation’s largest private art & design university, offering accredited AA, BFA, MFA degrees and certificates both on campus and online.
