Fans / Earthwatch Institute

We designed three paper fans with pictures of animals on each panel and mailed them to the public during summer. It was a low cost yet effective way for people to stay cool. When people opened the panels on the fan, they would see one animal turn into another and then another revealing our message “the more you fan, the more animals will survive”. The public learned that by simply fanning themselves they could help reduce carbon emissions and save animals.
The carbon emissions from air-conditioning leads to animal extinction because they speed up global warming. We wanted to persuade people that with just a little personal effort, they could use less air-conditioning and help save many animals from extinction.
As fans had rarely been designed in this way before, it took time to find a suitable supplier.
