The One Show Honors 2006 Pencil Winners

The One Show

May 11, 2006

NEW YORK, NY (May 11, 2006) - The One Show, the advertising industry's most prestigious awards ceremony, announced the winners of Gold, Silver and Bronze Pencils last evening, May 10h at Jazz at Lincoln Center in the Time Warner Center. The One Show awards, produced by the non-profit organization The One Club, celebrated the year's best in creative work in front of more than 600 industry professionals. The competition also includes One Show Design, now in its 5th year.

One Show Highlights
Top honors for "Best in Show" went to Abbot Mead Vickers agency for its spot "noitulovE" for client Guinness. Aptly titled "evolution" spelled backwards, the UK commercial takes viewers on a humorous high-speed journey through time from a present-day pub to the early stages of life in a visually-arresting tour de force. Mary Warlick, Executive Director of The One Club, notes the rise in the number of commercials using sophisticated computer effects for animation and big production values normally reserved for movies.

"The animated Guinness commercial is a groundbreaking example of how a creative storyline can keep an established brand fresh," said Warlick. "The concept of a return to the beginning - as a survey of how human life has evolved - is an ingenious approach in re-selling the concept of an established beverage."

At the One Show, the agencies receiving the highest number of awards were DDB and BBDO (part of the Omnicom group) with 13 Pencils each. Both agencies have not had such a strong showing at recent awards competitions, and the honors beckon a re-emergence of those agencies' creative prowess. BBDO's other noteworthy winner exemplifies excellence in creative integration as the agency hauled in two Silver Pencils in Innovative Marketing for installations on behalf of Fed Ex/Kino's. Other top-winning agencies included Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide and Crispin Porter + Bogusky.

The 2006 Client of the Year is Unilever, representing another creative re-emergence as a packaged goods company. Unilever revitalized its brand with some of the most effective creative advertisements, including the noted Axe campaigns.

One Show Design Highlights
One Show Design enjoyed an impressive year with Happy Forsman as the highest-winning agency. The Swedish firm hauled in 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze Pencils for exemplary poster campaigns for in various cultural and religious institutions.

In its first year directly entering the One Show Design, Apple Computer's in-house design team proved formidable as the technology giant won two Pencils - a Silver and a Gold.

The contenders in both competitions were selected from a record-breaking 17,000 entries from 59 countries around the world, solidifying the One Show as the preeminent international awards competition.
