"It's Coming From Inside The House"

By Alixandra Rutnik on Jan 27, 2020

In-house creative teams scored big at last year's One Show. Will they repeat?

Once the domain of "meh" projects, and a less than stellar track record for attracting top talent, in-house agencies and creative departments have seen a phenomenal turn-around, and are now some of the hottest places to work and do great work. This became so evident to us here at The One Club for Creativity that last year we added "In-House Agency of the Year" honors to our award show.

The deadline for The One Show 2020 is fast approaching, and if early submissions are any indication, this could be another great year for in-house creative teams. Ahead of this Friday's deadline, we took a look at five of last year's in-house winners to show why they stand shoulder to shoulder with the agency world.

1. SPOTIFY

Spotify’s online culture is straight eye-candy — who doesn’t love their annual Spotify Wrapped? Two Spotify campaigns won Gold Pencils at last year's One Show 2019, helping to propel them into the In-House Agency of the Year spot; “Your 2018 Wrapped” provided Spotify users with fun analytics detailing the way they listened to music over the past year, while “David Bowie is Here” launched artwork featuring the iconic musician all throughout the New York subway system.

With eye-popping colors, engaging fonts, and enticing analytics, Spotify's in-house team is taking entertainment branding and engagement by storm.

2. APPLE

No one can contest Apple’s greatness when it comes to coveted tech, but their in-house creative team is no slouch when it comes to promoting their products. Apple’s “More In the Making” is a mesmerizing and sensory video that alludes to the ultimate sensory experiences Apple always provides with its gear. With all kinds of colors, shapes, movements, and beats pulsating while making up the Apple logo, it's no wonder that submission was recognized at The One Show 2019.

3. SQUARESPACE

You don't have to be a big-name ad agency to attract big names to bring your ideas to life. The in-house creative team at Squarespace tapped the directorial skills of Spike Jonze and the heretofore little-known comedic chops of Idris Elba for this four-minute spot that focuses on the latter half of the company's "Dream It. Make It" line. This spot was recognized at last year's One Show.

4. GOOGLE

Google’s “Draw to Art” project won two Gold Pencils and a Silver Pencil at last year's show — and rightfully so, because these interactive easels are freaking awesome. You can doodle anything and, Google's smart technology will pull famous artwork from an enormous digital gallery and match it to your doodle. These easels have been implemented in various galleries and cultural centers in Europe to encourage interactive learning. Google is always coming up with something new and innovative to make working and learning easier for everyone.

5. SHISEIDO

Bucking the trend of great in-house work only coming out of tech companies, Japanese cosmetics giant Shiseido’s “Black and Red” project is a series of intensely colored posters featuring different makeup items like mascara and lipstick. “Black and Red” won two Gold Pencils and one Silver Pencil at The One Show 2019.
