About the Work

Celebrated artist and author, Kadir Nelson, creates an iconic portrait of a southern baseball player to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Negro Baseball Leagues; the birthplace and training grounds for baseball Hall of Famers Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby, and countless others. The innovative leagues were known for fast-paced action and clever field-play, night baseball, and packed stadiums, and were among the leading African-American owned enterprises in the United States between 1920 and the mid-1940s.
