About the Work

This cover story is about the pandemic's toll on communities of color in Los Angeles County. In mid-January there, one person was dying every eight minutes. We wanted the cover to capture the grief that comes with each death, so we chose this photograph of Maria Salina Cruz and Maritza Crusz, the wife and daughter of Felipe cruz, consoling each other after he died. Felipe, who was 48, spent 22 days in an intensive-care unit. For this story, photographer Meridith Kohut examines insides the homes and hospital rooms of those hit hardest by the pandemic.
