"We think it's done... the volcano might be closing up," we were told by a handful of locals in Iceland. Understandingly, but somewhat dejected, we still made our way over to the Geldingadalir Volcano. And we were glad we did.
When we got in the car, the skies were on fire, glowing an orange-red above the mountains. We raced over to the foothills and were treated with one of the most incredible sights we’ve ever seen. My heart racing and my interest peaked, I quizzed a Park Ranger on his way down the hill, "What's going on up there?!?! How's it look?" “This will be on the news tomorrow,” he delivered in his stoic Icelandic timber.
Many a drone were lost during their flights over this natural wonder. "Be sure to pull your SD Card on your last flight... In case it all goes to sh*t," a fellow, helpful photographer encouraged me. My own returned with only a mild, medium-brown toasting, and loaded with memories.
I'm so incredibly grateful to have witnessed this epic moment in real-time, and to have been able to bring home some footage and stills. It's an evening under Iceland's Midnight Sun that I won't soon forget.
