About the Work

Our Feb. 28 cover story featured a profile of Kazuo Ishiguro, the 2017 Nobel laureate whose newest book, ‘'Klara and the Sun,’' was released earlier this year. Ishiguro is a poetic writer who takes on deep humanistic issues through his characters, and we felt that we had the responsibility to do something equally poetic and interpretive for the cover. Ishiguro ‘'defamiliarizes the human condition,’' and for his portrait, shot by Jack Davison, we sought to defamiliarize him through a cerebral and obscured photograph.
