About the Work
"THE LEATHER SCRAP KIMONO"
- Transforming Unused Leather Edges into Ridgelines Through Japanese Aesthetics-
Brief / Background
Ezo deerskin leather originates from Hokkaido, Japan, and is hunted to prevent damage to crops and forests, which has become an increasingly serious issue in recent years.
We attempted to present the appeal of Japanese leather without wasting any of this precious material, from a multifaceted perspective on the state of modern leather culture and industry in an age when SDGs are of utmost importance.
Solution
The natural shape of this precious material embodies the spirit of the animal from which it came. Unfortunately, the edges of the leather, which have their own natural beauty, are cut off and discarded during the production process.
We focused on highlighting the beauty of the organic curves of the leather's edges, and used them to create an image a mountainous landscape where wildlife naturally resides, and crossed it with Yugen - the concept of the subtle and profound - to create a world reminiscent of Japanese ink painting, and rendered the mountains’ ridgelines to appear on each piece of leather.
The fog that rises in the air is reproduced by a skilled craftsman using an airbrush to delicately control the shading. A total of 100 pieces of leather, each with its own unique gradient, were glued together by hand so that no seams appeared, and finally it was tailored into a KIMONO, a traditional garment that uses fabric in its entirety without any waste.
The ancient human spirit of cherishing things, the aesthetic sense of the Japanese people, and the exceptional skills of leather craftsmen all came together in the completion of this work.
