About the Work

Project Honor The message, “To be Asian is an honor.” was inspired by Sandra Oh's 2019 Golden Globes acceptance speech. The idea is to show a community of Asian American Pacific Islander members being unapologetically proud of who they are. The portraits were inspired by photos of our own families, friends, and neighbors in the Bay Area. It captures our joy, diversity and pride found in everyday moments. Creating these portraits was quite an intimate process—though I may not know all of them personally, by studying every curvature, line and scare on their faces I felt a deep connect with each one. In the work, I chose shades of gold, as it is the most prized color across many Asian cultures, symbolizing strength, beauty, success and triumph. The lettering is inspired by a Chinese proverb about solidarity, which translates to “It’s easy to break one chopstick, but they become unbreakable when put together.”
