About the Work

This is the world's first book of drawings of real caterpillars by Suzuko Momoyama, a painter who is fascinated by them.
Many people dislike caterpillars and they are usually not considered aesthetic objects, but if you zoom in and observe them closely, you will be amazed at the beauty of each and every one of them. This book explores the splendor of caterpillars through a variety of pictorial approaches.

1) Unfolded Views
By observing caterpillars from various angles, the flow of the beautiful patterns covering their bodies is unfolded as geometric nets.

2) Natural History Drawings
Observations of caterpillars and their food plants, hatching, pupation, eclosion, and other aspects of caterpillar ecology are depicted in the form of natural history drawings.

3) Textile Pattern
A textile pattern that depicts the endless repetition of the life cycle of a butterfly, from egg to imago.

4) Landscape Paintings
A patch of grass becomes a forest, a pebble becomes a rocky mountain.
With a small caterpillar in the background, the artist paints a magnificent landscape that includes the caterpillar’s entire life.
