“Things Originated from the Black were Born in Nothingness” is Auspic Paper’s first art book series publication, taking the company’s own “virtue colours: Refined Black” art paper as its starting point, transforms paper itself from an object of its design into the main subject of the work. Presenting numerous images taken from the public domain, recontextualized through reproduction, editing, design, and the craftsmanship of printing, the book reflects and records the evolution of human civilization.

The designer is both the author and editor of the book. Practically speaking, this is a paper swatch book through which the creative team aims to propose solutions to a cultural dilemma, sublimating the contemporary meaning of a traditional medium through design.

The book narrates the author’s reimagining of world history through found images from a hundred years ago. From the enlightenment of astronomy’s “quest for knowledge” to the initial tools in the Stone Age, the work enumerates the progression of humanity’s development to define a specific worldview. This subjective understanding is also a question: "Can images express real history?"

With a visual emphasis resembling a “fable”, the entire book is printed with UV white and silver ink, and the cover is hand-serigraphed with silver and gold ink, with each cover possessing variable ink distribution. The book’s images are all produced using methods that best present the texture and characteristics of the paper, and as they are essentially digital products, allude to a balance in the tension between print and digital media.
