About the Work
Gunkanjima, also known as "Battleship Island", is a World Heritage site in Nagasaki, Japan. Due to typhoons and the deterioration of concrete, however, it is now on the verge of collapse. The conservation costs hundreds of millions of dollars, and public support is needed. How can we raise people's attention to this problem?
In collaboration with Noguchi Laboratory of the University of Tokyo, we calculated the "life expectancy" of each existing building on Gunkanjima for the first time in the world. Using this data, we created series of graphics composed of beautiful photographies of Gunkanjima buildings and calligraphy of numbers that show how much time is left until their collapse.
We held an exhibition in Gunkanjima Digital Museum in Nagasaki displaying these graphics, and invited stakeholders including government officials and academic researchers. The graphics were widely shared on social media which led to increased awareness of the problem and fundraising for conservation.
