About the Work

In a climate emergency context, Barcelona is adapting to new mobility needs and redefining how to live in the city. Tactical urbanism changes the function of the streets quickly and cheaply in order to gain space to walk, play, rest, take care of ourselves and the others... That is, in order to recover the urban space for the citizens. The graphic system developed to identify these actions is a tool designed to be applied quickly and at low cost by painting. It works as a signage code to idenitfy the asphalt surfaces that have been gained for pedestrians, bicycles, schools and recreational uses. The “panot” (Barcelonian paving stone) is the recognizable code since 1906 in Barcelona for areas dedicated to walk. The new design adapts the original “panots” so they can be stencil painted and transforms them into a flexible system, which can adopt different forms according to the diversity of the urban space. The graphic system adapts by means of colour, scale, figuration or abstraction regarding the original “panot”... The modules also build a bespoke typeface. It indicates uses, names of streets, schools and so on. But it’s also used to communicate the urban actions that are carried out. The graphic system is proposed as an open source toolbox, interpretable by the citizens and by the design and architecture teams in charge of executing the different actions. On the one hand, the project provides an easily recognizable code that facilitates the use of urban space and, on the other hand, it humanizes the asphalted areas. This project is a graphic image for a new urban model for Barcelona, with new values adapted to our reality today: sustainability, empowerment of pedestrians, sustainable mobility, green city, appropriation of the streets by citizens, socialization of urban space...
