About the Work
Since 1963, The RAND Corporation has published an annual calendar that features quotations by and portraits of notable individuals. I was honored to be commissioned by The RAND Corporation to illustrate the 2023 RAND Calendar. I was provided 15 quotations by historical figures that included Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Mary McLeod Bethune, Jane Goodall, I.M. Pei, and others. My task was to create portrait illustrations of the individuals that reflected the spirit of their quote and highlighted their individual achievements.
My goal was to allow my research to inform the design solutions for each illustration. Using chalk pastel, found objects, and cut paper collage, I designed compositions that placed each portrait subject in a meaningful environment to give context to the illustration.
Twelve illustrations were selected out of the fifteen commissioned to be printed in the 2023 calendar.
