About the Work
To help WWF communicate the devastating effects of wildfires on our increasingly flammable planet we used the naturally destructive properties of real fire to create a direct visual metaphor between our increasingly flammable planet and the animated environment.
We combined real fire with a flammable set, props, and puppet. We wanted the process of making the film to reflect the issue we were communicating and have the physical jeopardy of the shoot carry over to the viewer.
In the film, as in real life, a menacing and remorseless fire consumes and destroys everything.
Stop-motion and fire don't mix. We struggled for months to find a way to use the natural properties of real fire in a way that conveys the devastation of wildfires. Fire is destructive and remorseless, both in real life and on the stop-motion set, destroying everything that comes on its way. We ended up walking on a very thin line where the whole project was on the very edge of literally going up in flames, creating a level of jeopardy that is hopefully conveyed in the story. During the four week shoot most of the props were completely burned, resulting to the final look of the film.
