About the Work
On March 15, 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked us to imagine a reality where North American cities were under attack. In order to raise awareness of the situation of the Ukrainian people, we have placed the cities of New York, Toronto and Montreal under siege.
The challenge of this project lays in the sensitivity of the subject. We had to present the most dystopian type of reality. The rendering had to look realistic, and not embellish the scenes of war like a movie or a video game might. It was necessary to generate emotional reaction in order to give impact to the image. Our contribution to the project was completed in less than 72 hours.
This project allowed the artist to reconnect with a two-dimensional approach and use their expertise in matte painting, techniques with which they had not recently worked with. The artists were keen on using real references and nothing manufactured in order to create an emotional connection with the audience. Out of respect to Ukraine, no shots or stills from the ongoing events in the country were used in this production.
