About the Work
For our annual Great Performers Issue, we commissioned the photographer Ryan McGinley. The photo sessions with 10 major actors were done in New York City, Los Angeles and London. McGinley was inspired to assign each actor a color. The photo sessions were a fantastical world of lace, tulle, chiffon, netting, parachute fabric, vintage glass vases, magnifying glasses, gels, strings of beads, fake flowers, sheets of mottled glass and even an unattached shower door, all serving as reality-bending filters for McGinley to create portraits that would fit a fairy tale.
