About the Work

Located in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan with over 130 years of its history, Kuroki Honten has been producing shochu, Japan’s original distilled alcohol. Osuzuyama distillery is a second one Kuroki Honten has established deep in the mountain with full of nature as a result of its pursuit for a quality water source. It produces innovative items such as distilled spirits made with a homemade shochu and pickled local plants of Miyazaki and whiskies made with homemade barley malted using its original method. over the past quarter of a century, Osuzuyama distillery has also been known as a sake brewery operating a sustainable circular agriculture. The raw ingredients it uses are from its own farm named Association of the Reviving Land as well as products grown in the local area. It produces the shochu made with raw ingredients through its own entire process from plowing the land, sowing the seeds, cultivation to harvesting. The waste liquid produced during distillation is regenerated as a slow-release organic fertilizer and used for preparing the soil of agricultural land and growing raw material crops. Environmental impact caused by conventional agriculture has been a serious problem in recent years. Circular agriculture is the key to resolve it. Osuzuyama distillery has already established this sustainable circular agriculture since 1998. It is because it believes that any environmental pollution mustn’t be produced in its production process particularly because shochu cannot be made without benefitting from nature. When we worked on the bottle design of OSUZU GIN made at the Osuzuyama distillery, we reflected its branding attitude. The bottle is designed so that it can be reused as a flower vase after finished drinking. Reuse can reduce the amount of disposals to burn, bury and recycle. From agriculture to packaging- Osuzuyama distillery thoroughly practices sustainable distillery in every possible way.
