About the Work
The Nike SB Dunk was created in 2002 by skateboarders for skateboarders with a single purpose - skating. The shoes took street culture by storm—kickstarting the modern sneaker craze. Over time, SB Dunks became so valuable, people locked them aways in boxes rather than skating them. As the oldest and largest marketplace for sneakers, eBay saw an opportunity to remind people what SB Dunks were designed to do.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nike SB and the re-release of the iconic eBay SB Dunk from 2003, eBay teamed up with Nike to create the first sneaker box you can skate - taking the modern symbol of unworn kicks and turning it into a constant reminder to use the shoes inside for their intended purpose. Ten skateable boxes were auctioned off on eBay, raising more than $350,000 for the Bodecker Foundation—a charity founded by the late creator of Nike SB, Sandy Bodecker. The boxes included a tribute pair based on the original eBay Dunk, a pair of the 2022 re-release, and a commemorative saw – a playful nod to the cut-up samples of the original 1:1 pair.
With over 700 million earned impressions, the eBay x Nike SB Dunks Skateable Box broke through in top sneaker, lifestyle and sports media outlets, with feature coverage in Sports Illustrated, ESPN, Complex, Hypebeast, and Transworld Skateboarding.
