这是一本介绍京剧的书，以一戏一文一图的形式呈现。
在书籍结构设计上，希望读者打开这本书时，像是拉开一道通往京剧艺术的大幕。“给读者的一封信”就是一次邀约，读者借由一张“戏票”，走进“剧场”开始“看戏”。目录设计成京剧舞台的幕布，大幕拉开戏目显现，幕布后面，生、旦、净、丑几大行当的角色人物渐次出场。
书籍设色按京剧舞台枣红色大幕、浅绿色二道幕、浅黄色三道幕来设计，借此烘托出舞台的氛围。每折戏相对独立，阅读从戏目、戏名、戏种、说戏、说角、杂说、戏词、戏画，一步步展开和推进，戏画以写意国画风格创作。每看完一折戏，会有一个幕间休息的空间。在此读者可以自由选择进入任意一折戏，每折戏都是一个精彩的故事。
