About the Work

There's Light: Artworks & Conversations Examining Black Masculinity, Identity & Mental Well-being is an art book featuring more than sixty artworks by established contemporary artists and emerging talents, as well as more than thirty interviews with actors from various backgrounds, including the late Virgil Abloh, Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, Mark Bradford, Wyatt Cenac, Barkley Hendricks, Rashid Johnson, Glenn Ligon, Steve McQueen, Tyler Mitchell, Darnell L. Moore, Pope.L. This collection of artworks and conversations, assembled and edited by contemporary artist Glenn Lutz, explores the psyche of black men, his identity today, and how to overcome the traumas and injustices inherited from the community to succeed. The book unfolds against a black backdrop, only to lighten as the pages unfold, becoming brighter and brighter and giving a glimpse of the community's hope. The typography used for the book is inspired by the signs used during racial demonstrations in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s, and is used at various scales to create strong and bold compositions.
