About the Work

For decades, internet memes have been a visually based phenomenon reliant on text and images to generate kernels of shared meaning, but TikTok changed that by creating the conditions to meme-ify sound. Our story on the proliferation of these audio memes traces several popular audio tracks back to their source material and contemplates what makes these memes so compelling to us. Phonetic typography and audio simulate the kinds of interactions users experience on the platform and cascading videos highlight their virality.
