João was born in Lima, Peru and grew up in Vancouver, Canada. After earning a degree in Psychology, João pursued photography in earnest by completing a fine arts degree at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. A move to NYC in 2009 provided the impetus for him to further refine his vision. A master of color and composition, he is fascinated by the way light interacts with space. João shapes the body movements of dancers and athletes into stories full of emotion and energy. A lifelong traveler, he finds inspiration in the familiarity of foreign landscapes. Whether shooting advertising campaigns for Lyft, Nike, Delta Airlines, and American Express; or commissions for publications such as Fast Company, GQ and Travel & Leisure, João pushes his lens just beyond the expected. João was named one of PDN’s 30 early in his career and has won multiple awards in American Photography and PDN’s Photo Annual over the years. Currently, João is combining his photographic and narrative acumen to tell stories on film. Recent projects include a short documentary set in India, and a live action short shot in Moscow.
