The Young Ones is a Melbourne-based publication that takes an in-depth look at what it’s like to be a creative in today’s world. Through our online profiles and print conversations, we tell the real stories of the design industry—including the good, the bad and the ugly-cries.

The transition from creative design education to industry is not a straightforward linear path, and it is becoming more rare for a graduate to secure full time employment after graduation. TYO aims to be both an educational tool and source of inspiration for young creatives trying to break it into the industry. We interview creatives at different stages of their career to understand how they got to where they are today, revealing the interesting ups and downs and twists and turns that happen in all careers.

TYO’s is driven by the professional and personal experience of both editors, and their desire to make key figures in the industry accessible to design students, graduates and the wider creative community. TYO was stocked at reputable design bookshops Happy Valley and Metropolis Bookstore, Kunstler and Magnation. In 2015 RMIT invested into the start up through the New Enterprise Investment Fund scheme.

My Role in This Project
The Young Ones was born from my, and my co-founder Petrea Dickinson's, personal experience of being design students. We both came from unrelated (but extremely helpful nonetheless) backgrounds in law and political studies respectively, before entering design school. During our time as design students it become evident that a job in the creative industry would be few and far between for graduates and this new world of design and creativity was foreign to us considering our prior background. Our solution was to interview creatives who had made it in their field to get an understanding of how they achieved success and what their day to day work life involved. We created a print publication to publish our interviews in order to inspire young creatives like ourselves.

We personally designed the magazine, edited the interviews, raised funding for the printing and managed the PR and distribution of product. We were driven by our own personal experience and passion to make the transition into industry easier for other young creatives.
