We all know what the pandemic did to us. It kept us secluded. Trapped. All we wanted to do was go out and socialize. Now that COVID-19 has finally died down, everyone is more confident to go out. But in the Philippines, another virus continues to rise – Dengue virus. In fact, at least 118,785 dengue cases were recorded in 2022. With more people going out, more are exposed to Dengue mosquitoes. Coffee Project, a well-loved café chain in the Philippines, wanted to help communities fight back in the most sustainable way possible. How? Simply by upcycling used coffee beans. Filipinos spend a lot of time in cafes, and Coffee Project has been a favorite choice. This led the brand to think of ways to demonstrate how it values, not just its customers, but also the communities it belongs to. Luckily, the solution was right inside their cafés. According to research, mosquitoes are repelled by the odor created from burning used coffee grounds. So we thought, why dispose all of Coffee Project’s used coffee grounds, if we can repurpose them into mosquito repelling incense that’s safer for the environment versus the toxic chemicals found in other repellents. So we created BEANCENSE. Coffee-made Dengue repellent. We mixed old coffee grounds with wood shavings, packaged them in jars, and gave them away in our cafes nationwide. To use it, simply scoop 2-3 spoons of Beancense from the jar, place it on a saucer, and light it up. The campaign truly sparked awareness and interest amongst our consumers. More people took notice and started using the Beancense. People in communities started using it as well as a replacement for other insect repellents. The more we spread Beancense, the more we can help stop Dengue from happening.
