Food for women, by women.
Virago Magazine celebrates female foodies and chefs of all backgrounds. A virago is a woman of masculine strength and spirit—a female warrior. Targeted towards women ages 18-34, it empowers them by sharing experiences of being noticed in an industry set to put them down, as well as sharing fun recipes of all different backgrounds.
I wanted Virago Magazine to distance themself from food magazine culture—cute, sweet, and domestic. Instead, I aimed for this magazine to be tough and edgy. This was achieved through the use of design elements that give the brand an elevated look and feel. The logo is set in "Trash", a powerful typeface with sharp and geometric features that is meant for bold statements. The photo treatments and colors are unconventional for a food magazine, yet grabs attention when sitting on the shelf. The interior layouts use an eclectic mix of typography with dynamic modifications to grids.
