Description

It’s not widely known that such a major art movement as Constructivism originated in Russia over 100 years ago. It migrated from a young new country, the Soviet Union, to Europe, where it quickly spread. Emphasizing geometrism, simplicity of form, rigor and solidity, it’s pioneers included Alexander Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, Vladimir Tatlin, Alexei Gan, Lyubov Popova. The ideas of constructivism were adopted by the German Bauhaus and the Dutch art group De Stijl. To celebrate this revolutionary art movement, we launched an open poster competition (original poster series by curator Peter Bankov kick-started the contest) as part of a large-scale educational project VKHUTEMAS.ACADEMY dedicated to the unique heritage of VKhUTEMAS Soviet art school. VKhUTEMAS was similar to the German Bauhaus in its intent, curriculum and scope. Both schools were first to merge the craft tradition with modern technology through courses on aesthetic principles, color theory, industrial design, and architecture.
