Description
Seibido started producing woodblock illustrations and lettering 126 years ago, eventually designing countless newspaper advertisements. But most publishing today is digital, and Seibido’s clients had forgotten their history and previous traditional techniques.
So when they moved headquarters in 2022, we installed a retrospective exhibit in their historic previous location: A Mountain of History.
To convey Seibido’s history, we stacked newspapers to form a “mountain,” open to show decades’ worth of advertisements. The title was written on the wall in Japanese lettering selected from Seibido advertisements from throughout their history, chosen to convey the history of Japanese newspaper advertising. Also featured were woodblocks and other reminders of Seibido’s older, traditional techniques.
We created promotional flyers in five designs featuring a mountain. Laying them side by side creates a depiction of a “美” (the “bi” in Seibido) climbing the mountain.
This installation presented Seibido’s 126-year history in an unforgettable way.
