About the Work
LGBTQ+ family protection isn’t federal law in the United States. And LGBTQ+ people looking to start or grow their families face legal discrimination, massive financial burdens, and social bias at every step of the process. It takes time, money, and energy for them to become parents, but most of all, it takes courage.
It’s a monumental struggle for these parents-to-be. It’s a struggle that Family Equality, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting these families on their journey, is working to solve. But it’s a struggle that many, many Americans simply are not aware of.
We needed to present this serious topic in an entertaining way in order to capture and hold people’s attention. And to explain a complicated story as simply as possible. So we took a familiar parenting scenario, and told a new version. Every line of dialogue in the entire film is true. That’s really what the LGBTQ+ community deals with in becoming parents. But as the dad told the story to his kid, our film engaged with and explained the issue to our audience – and drove to Family Equality’s site to show people how they can become advocates for change.
It rolled out in media publications across industries and through high profile social influencers outside of Family Equality’s current network to engage new audiences. Family Equality saw an 88% increase in site traffic in the week after launch. There were 116 unique viewers who visited Family Equality’s action page and of those visitors, 18 people called their Senators to urge passage of the John Lewis Every Child Deserves a Family Act and the Equality Act.
