About the Work

Covid changed life as we knew it, but those who are deaf and hard of hearing were disproportionately affected, exacerbating existing inequities. To highlight the need for accessibility in tech, we showcased how Google's real-time captioning features help everyone stay connected when it matters most.

During last year’s Academy Awards, we launched A CODA Story, using Hollywood’s biggest stage to tell the real story of how Google employee and Child of Deaf Adults, Tony Lee, relied on this technology to help bridge gaps in distance and communication between generations when the pandemic made it otherwise impossible. To further demonstrate the importance of and our commitment to inclusion, we partnered with ABC and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to provide closed captioning and, for the first time in telecast history, audio descriptions for blind and low-vision viewers of the show. Google’s sponsoring of captions and audio descriptions made the 2021 Oscars the most accessible in the show’s 93-year history.
