About the Work

Since the Olympic sport pictograms were first used at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games, it has become standard for each Olympic and Paralympic Games to develop their own set of sport pictograms.
With an understanding that the Olympic sport pictograms have its origins in Japan, and building on this history and story, we decided to continue the development of the Tokyo 2020 sport pictograms with an aim for innovation.

In developing the Tokyo 2020 sport pictograms, we first focused on the sport pictograms from the Tokyo 1964 Games.
While respecting the Tokyo 1964 sport pictograms and following their basic design, we developed them with a modern form that also expresses the dynamism of the athletes, all while keeping in mind a plan to develop an animated version of the sport pictograms.
As a point of innovation for the Tokyo 2020 Games, we aimed to develop a set of sport pictograms in motion. As a result, animated sport pictograms were developed for all 50 disciplines in the Olympic Games and for all 23 sports in the Paralympic Games, every one of which passed the strict requirements from the international sports federations before being presented to the world.
While the idea of making sport pictograms themselves innovative are becoming harder and harder, the development of animated sport pictograms, with each pictogram having its own unique movement, along with the ability to show them on any digital device has succeeded in drawing attention to sport pictograms once again. This innovative idea from Tokyo 2020 has led to another new Olympic and Paralympic standard.
