About the Work

“A CODA Story” shares how Googler Tony Lee and his family bridged gaps in distance and communication during the pandemic with the help of Google’s real-time captioning tools. Accessibility stories are rarely told in advertising, often taking a back seat to ads focused on gender and racial equity. CODA showed audiences that accessibility is a critical piece of comprehensive DEI efforts during this year’s Academy Awards as the first-ever commercial on accessibility to air on broadcast television. To further demonstrate the importance of and our commitment to inclusion, we partnered with ABC and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to provide closed captioning and, for the first time in telecast history, audio descriptions for blind and low-vision viewers of the show. After our Oscar’s debut, Tony’s story was further brought to life with a fully integrated campaign including a YouTube Masthead, digital product shorts featuring Live Captions, a trends-based social campaign teaching people how to sign common phrases, and a Keyword post showcasing Google’s helpful assistive features for the Deaf/HoH community and the Googlers building them.
