About the Work
Innovating a tale as old as time: Bedtime Stories with a parent are something every child should experience. Even children with incarcerated parents. We captured the intimacy of storytime through the sounds of the parent’s voice and brought that audio right into the child’s bedroom with our special app.
As COVID-19 forced businesses, restaurants and even schools to close - the Cook County Department of Corrections was no different. And at one point, the Cook County Jail was the number one COVID-19 hot spot in the entire US. Visiting hours were immediately halted and the inmates were closed off from seeing their family with no date of reuniting in sight.
Because of limited technology within the jail, the available computers and teleconferencing equipment had to be used for court dates instead of visiting hours.
However, the unintended victim during the pandemic became the children. Schools and libraries had been shut down indefinitely and now they were losing the limited access to their parents behind bars.
So, we created a program with the Bedtime Stories app to bring families back together so children could hear their parent reading books to them... just as if they were side by side.
Within the jail, inmates make an audio recording of themselves reading a children’s book. That recording is uploaded to the Bedtime Stories cloud server. At home, the child accesses the secure recording within the Bedtime Stories app.
When the child hovers a smartphone over the book’s pages, the parent’s voice comes to life, reading the book, word by word. In addition, the parent can read special messages for their child, further simulating the read-together experience.
Bedtime Stories not only helped incarcerated parents reconnect with their children during the pandemic, the program encouraged other families stuck at home to read more and continue to develop interpersonal skills that can only be achieved by reading together.
