About the Work

Every day, a vast amount of child sexual abuse material is uploaded and shared online. The major tech companies who manage these platforms don’t do enough to monitor or permanently remove these images and videos. Instead, they’re allowed to live online, leaving survivors vulnerable. Many of them forever. This means the original abuse is only the beginning of the cycle. That child sexual abuse material that lives online then gets shared, leaving many survivors open to revictimization – fear of being recognized, online stalking and so on. They feel like they can never escape their tormentors. This film dramatizes that feeling. It shows how the online presence of this material haunts survivors. And we lay bare the fact that by refusing to take real action against the digital proliferation of child sexual assault materials, tech companies are essentially allowing child sexual predators to stay in their victims’ lives forever. As the soundtrack to this story, we chose a starting place reflective of the opening scene’s innocence. We hear the cheerful tones of ‘Hush Little Baby’ emanating from the children’s show on the TV. Of course, the track takes on a darker tone and meaning as our narrative plays out. The track’s arch structure was painstakingly crafted to be a perfect parallel to our story. We start with an innocent melody that gets derailed and deconstructed the further we get from the opening scene. The layers build as does the plot. Each is more complex, mirroring our survivor’s inner struggles in each of the various scenes throughout her life. At the end; as we look back at that fateful morning, we return to that innocent melody, but this time it is sadder and much heavier.
