About the Work
In honour of Heart Month, SickKids presents “Lily’s Raincoat”, a song inspired and powered by the sound of a SickKids patient who had congenital heart disease, Lily. This piece serves as a reminder that the parents and children at SickKids are fighting these kinds of battles every day.
The creatives at Juliet Agency had the idea of doing something special with the sound of Lily’s heartbeat, a child who had succumbed to congenital heart disease. The idea was to make music out of it to help it beat on forever. With the parents’ consent, SickKids gave Tom Westin at Grayson Music an audio recording of Lily’s heartbeat.
Tom knew that Martina Sorbara of Dragonette would bring something magical, an incredible story and her beautiful voice to this project. He created the musical arrangement and let it all flow from the raw sound of Lily’s tiny heart, blossoming as it grew, and always mindful that the essence of the song was that singular element. Martina was inspired to pen the lyrics after hearing Lily’s heartbeat in the context of the musical arrangement that Tom had crafted. “I closed my eyes and saw a crystal-clear picture. I heard a wide wondrousness and all the words were in there waiting for me. As I sang, I wondered whether I was singing to Lily, or if Lily was singing to me.”
