About the Work
[Sanitation Workers, One World’s Most Dangerous Profession]
A garbage truck’s engine car takes up 98% of the entire truck. The problem is the garbage truck’s gas exhaustion, aircraft-level noise pollution, and engine heat that reaches 40°C threatening sanitation workers’ health. Due to the garbage truck’s emission, sanitation workers’ lung functions are worse than mine workers, leading to a high risk of lung cancer. The Hyundai Motor Group aimed to fix this chronic problem with hydrogen car technology. Why hydrogen cars? Because of the sustainable feature of hydrogen cars not emitting anything other than water. Using water, the hydrogen car’s only by-product, we developed an essential feature for sanitation workers.
[The Hydrogen Garbage Truck Optimized For Sanitation Workers’ Health]
The sanitation workers’ work environment dramatically improved with the zero-emission Hydrogen Garbage Trucks, which have minimal noise pollution or heat exhaustion. The most important feature of the Hydrogen Garbage Truck is the portable sink which uses water, the only by-product of the truck. Sanitation workers are exposed to a variety of pollutants while collecting garbage. (An average of 260,000 bacteria are found on the sanitation worker’s body after work) However, because they could not wash their hands during work, sanitation workers were constantly suffering from various infectious diseases. The (drawer-type) portable sink reduced the risk of infection by 90% by allowing the sanitation workers to clean their hands anytime during work.
[Tangible Results So Far]
After the campaign, positive responses about Hyundai Motor Groups’ hydrogen cars have increased by 40%. The campaign film, which depicted the entire process of manufacturing Hydrogen Garbage Car, was watched by 80% of the Korean population(43M Views). It’s noteworthy that the majority of viewers were MZ generations with a high interest in sustainable vehicles.
After receiving stellar reviews, the Korean government announced plans to replace all garbage trucks sequentially with Hydrogen Garbage Trucks in the future. This is one of the biggest achievements of our campaign.
The result of the campaign was not limited to Korea. The Hydrogen Garbage Truck was presented as the best case of hydrogen vehicle at the 2022 Dubai Hydrogen Economy Forum, receiving great reviews from the attendees including President Moon Jae-In.
