About the Work
The Idea:
‘A single piece of plastic lasts more than 1000 years...that means the plastic we throw away will be around, when our great, great, great children are born…’
Letters to the future endeavors to make people realize how long plastic waste will last on our planet in a personal & human way. The idea is to tell people that plastic will become our “time capsule” to the future generations for many millennia from now.
The execution:
We wanted the entire planet to participate this initiative, so we invited people from all over the world. An outreach program was devised in which we asked people from to write letters to their great, great, great grandchild. They were asked to imagine, how it would feel to receive such a letter by them now. Perhaps by their great great great grandfather. People from 22 countries from all over the world participated and 327 letters were collected. All letters were hand written to capture the real emotion of the writer.
We then teamed up with local plastic re-cyclers, who go around the city on their bicycles and collect tons of plastic every day. We wanted to use only thrown away plastic as the base material. The plastic was cleaned and pressed using hot irons to create pages.
We then took the letters, scanned them to retain the original hand writing and turned them to silk screens. Each letter was individually screen printed.
Thus creating a book that would now lasts one thousand years.
The leftover plastic was used to create giant artworks that was inspired by the what was said in the letters which together formed the letters to the future exhibition.
The results:
This was one of few projects featured by The Long Now foundation, that encourages ideas at the time scale of civilization - the next and last 10,000 years - along side The Rosetta Project and the Clock of Long now.
Letters to the future generated 350+ individual pieces of content all around the world and a total of 54 million impressions were garnered.
