About the Work
Black-owned Friday is a Google initiative that transforms the busiest shopping time of the year into a day to purposefully support Black-owned businesses in our community. This year’s campaign encourages shoppers to shop Black-owned beyond just Black Friday and choose to shop Black every single day—showing them how to do it by actually letting them virtually experience it.
We see searches for Black-owned businesses spike during seasonal moments like Juneteenth and Black History Month and our goal was to remind consumers to choose Black-owned every time they shop, not just when it’s being promoted during specific cultural moments. To do this, we crafted an interactive music video that mimics the behavior of choosing Black-owned all day, every day, using Google’s Black-owned business badge—which denotes businesses that proudly identify as Black-owned.
We tapped Grammy-awarded business owner Ludacris and rap superstar Flo Milli to create a song, brought it to life in an interactive music video that reinforces the power of choice by giving power to viewers—they decide how Ludacris and Flo Milli go about their day, supporting different Black-owned businesses like a Black-owned Yoga Studio, Bookstore, Burger Spot, Vegan Cafe, Bakery, and Barbershop. Each choice leads to a unique visual world filled with 100+ products from over 70 different Black-owned businesses, carefully curated per scene, giving small Black-owned businesses an opportunity for their product to show up in a big way.
The film features products, real small business owners alongside influencer and celebrity cameos. Shot in Atlanta, Georgia, Ludacris’ hometown and the city with the third-highest percentage of Black-owned businesses,* the music video puts the power in the viewer’s hands to choose how Ludacris and Flo Milli spend their day and shows how to use Google search to replicate this behavior in their own lives when they’re deciding to shop.
