About the Work

Background On February 4, 2022, the opening ceremony of the 24th Beijing Winter Olympics was held at the National Stadium. And Beijing made its glorious history as the world's first dual-Olympic city. The opening ceremony hoped to present the aesthetics of ice and snow through digital media to express the Chinese-style romance. Insight The most representative element of the Winter Olympics is ice. Therefore, we used a 158m x 76m LED screen to simulate a large ice surface to form the stage. And all performances, installations, and digital content were designed to revolve around it. Idea The Beginning of Spring: It was the "Beginning of Spring" on the day of the opening ceremony. 393 actors holding glowing rods interacted with videos to reveal the fractal aesthetics of The Bloom, The Moon at the Window and other performances. The dandelions blown by a little girl turned into fireworks and bloomed in the sky, expressing the beauty of spring. Waters of the Yellow River: "The Yellow River comes from the sky, rushes into the sea and never returns”—a verse from the Chinese poet Li Bai. The videos presented on the vertical LED screen expressed the magnificent momentum of the Waters of the Yellow River rushing down. Olympic Rings in Ice: The water slowly froze, then a 10-meter-high ice cube rose from the ground. Chinese ink painting - style winter sports images on the ice cube told the history of the Winter Olympics. 24 laser beams surrounding the stadium carved the ice cube that later broke apart and revealed the Olympic Rings. The Lighting Ceremony: The micro-fire torch in the cauldron created a unique lighting ceremony in Olympic history, conveying the concept of low-carbon Olympics. Little snowflakes representing each participating countries converged into a big snowflake installation. Result The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics has received unprecedented engagement around the world. 2.01 billion people watched on both linear TV and digital platforms, with more than 600 million TV viewers in China. The opening ceremony is also the most watched Olympic program in the past 10 years since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Achieve the Winter Dream and Together for a Shared Future!
