About the Work
Sometimes the best solution to the world's biggest problems are the simplest. In this case, a letter with an official request for asylum for a tree of the Amazon was enough. On Arbor Day, September 21, 2021, the same day that President Bolsonaro was giving an opening speech at the General Assembly of the United Nations, masking the critical situation of the Amazon Forest, we sent more than 100 letters to foreign embassies in Brazil containing an official request for asylum for a Jatobá tree. These letters were also printed at OHH near the embassies and published in the same newspaper delivered to the ambassadors. A request so unprecedented that it drew the world's attention to a problem that belongs to all of us. All this ended with an invitation for our indigenous representative to tell the story behind the asylum application at COP-26, the UN climate change conference, where she called for help in front of big leaders. The pressure was huge and the Brazilian government promised to end illegal deforestation by 2028.
